  1. A tarantula is a wolf SPIDER Lycosa tarantula 
  2. with a 2½cm (1 inch body). It spins no web, 
  3. relying on its speed in hunting to catch its 
  4. prey. The name `tarantula' is also used for 
  5. any of the numerous large, hairy spiders of 
  6. the family Theraphosidae, with large poison 
  7. fangs, native to the South West USA and 
  8. tropical America.
